A joint media investigation involving Oyigbo Television, Urban News Nigeria, News Central Television and Rapid Television was conducted to assess the extent and impact of the worsening flood situation in Umuokolobo Community, Asa Clan, Oyigbo Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The media team visited the affected area on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, to document the situation on the ground, interact with residents and assess the effect of flooding on homes, roads, businesses, movement and daily life. Drone technology was also deployed to survey the affected communities from the air.

Findings of the investigation

The investigation revealed severe flooding in parts of Umuokolobo and surrounding areas. 3. Construct primary and secondary drainage channels. Government should construct and rehabilitate primary drains, secondary drains, community drains, culverts and appropriate receiving canals along major roads and internal streets.
4. Create water-retention and flood-management facilities. Retention ponds, reservoirs or detention basins should be considered where professional hydrological and engineering studies support them.
5. Properly utilise ecological funds. Resources should support drainage construction, waterway rehabilitation, flood-control infrastructure, retention facilities, culverts, bridges, monitoring and maintenance, with transparent implementation.
6. Include the community in planning. Residents can identify historical flood paths, water movement, blocked waterways and areas that stay flooded for long periods.
7. Establish emergency safety measures. These should include evacuation arrangements, temporary shelters, rescue boats where necessary, security, safe drinking water, sanitation, medical assistance and emergency communication.
